There are manifestos all over the place at the moment. The British political parties are currently spewing out their Middle England policies, while the National Campaign for the Arts has created a Drama & Theatre Manifesto. Julia Darling was an artist who championed the very nature of the manifesto, a novelist, poet and dramatist who once remarked “like new blood, it quite fires one up, and makes you feel like charging into the streets”.

To commemorate the tenth anniversary of Darling’s death, Live Theatre has commissioned a series of short plays, directed by Clive Judd and Anna Ryder, from playwrights including Laura Lindow, Amy Golding, Deborah Bruce, Nina Berry and Holly Reed Macrae. As Darling was a writer in residence at Live from 2001 to 2003, the writers have conjured up new pieces from a cauldron of ideas, drawing deep from Darling’s novels to her plays, her politics and her prose.

Rendezvous is an epic celebration as much a tribute, not just of Darling’s work but of a range of writers and directors across the region. With a truckload of wraparound events, featuring, of course, creative writing and poetry workshops, Live Theatre has converged on Darling’s life with fine energy and gorgeous memory to explore how her writings and beliefs are alive now more than ever.

Rendezvous is at Live Theatre, Newcastle from Thursday 28th May until Saturday 6th June.
