Berlin is one of the cultural capitals of Europe, yet that title alone means that it has gone through a lengthy process of space appropriation and gentrification over the years. It’s become a hub for a range of different tourists, many of whom use and claim spaces within the city as their own, even if they don’t know it. In their new work [Re]fit, writer Lauren Vevers and artist Mani Kambo have examined what it means to be a “post-tourist” and how developmental changes can affect an already established community.

Supported by The Writing Squad, the pair spent ten days in Berlin districts of Neukölln and Kreuzberg, where they spent time examining the unusual phenomenon of post-tourism and the assumed ownership of urban environments. They even temporarily occupied some of the spaces to get a first-hand comprehension of the relationship between culture (and counter-culture) and capitalist, consumer-driven restoration. The resulting findings have been collated into [Re]fit, which should prove to be a fascinating and thought-provoking creative insight into some of the issues surrounding space and gentrification. The launch at NewBridge Books will not only introduce [Re]fit to the world but also host a short film screening and alternative reading, a fitting event for this unique collaboration between writer and artist.

The [Re]fit book launch takes place at NewBridge Books, Newcastle on Friday 24th July.
