Red Bull Music Academy has a long history as a hugely successful breeding ground for new musical talent, and with the eighteenth edition to take place this autumn, there’s an opportunity for even more hopefuls to benefit from their excellent tutelage. Applications are now open on their website (here), and artists from all over the globe will be trying to claim one of the 40 places available for this year’s academy in Montreal, Canada.

The UK application phase is supported by two free lectures, to give prospective applicants a look at what it’s all about, and a little taste of what could be in store for them should they be successful. With one lecture in Brighton, we’re lucky that our region has been selected to host the second lecture, at Newcastle Castle on Tuesday 2nd February.

The talks come courtesy of former Academy alumnus, Lunice, who was part of the London Academy in 2010. He’ll be able to share stories of those experiences as well as answering questions from those hoping to make it to Montreal. With a further talk from house music legend Todd Edwards, there’s a chance to garner all you can from one of the godfathers of UK garage and a repeated Daft Punk collaborator. With his story threaded through dance music’s past two decades, there is plenty he’ll be able to offer to the up-and-coming musicians and producers in attendance.

With previous Academy alumni including the likes of Katy B, Jackmaster, Aloe Black, Hudson Mohawke, Koreless and Flying Lotus, this is a real life changing opportunity, and the the chance to sample a bit of what it’s all about is a must for those hoping to make it to Montreal.

The Red Bull Music Academy Lectures take place at Newcastle Castle on Tuesday 2nd February.
