Reckless, risky and rebellious aren’t necessarily words you would associate with people in the autumn of their lives. However, they are certainly descriptive of some of the artists featured in Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens’ new exhibition, Received Wisdom, running from Saturday 1st February-Sunday 10th May. Featuring work from the Arts Council Collection, this show explores the challenging work of modern and contemporary artists who refuse to grow old gracefully.

The exhibition is an eclectic mix of mediums and styles and features work by the likes of pioneering rebel and leading light of the Black Arts movement, Lubainia Himid, who in 2017 became the oldest recipient of the Turner Prize. She sits alongside one of the UK’s foremost conceptual artists, Amikam Toren as well the imposing and playful work of sculptor Phyllida Barlow, all of whose work demonstrates that art made to provoke is not just the province of the young.

The exhibition will be supported by Art Taster workshops for adults and young people to explore their own artistic abilities. It’s at this type of event that John Sheeny, another artist featured in the show, discovered his own artistic talent while sleeping rough. You never know what you can be unless you give it a go. After all, you’re never too old.

Received Wisdom is at Sunderland Museum & Winter Gardens from Saturday 1st February-Sunday 10th May
