As the winner of this year’s prestigious Woon Foundation Painting and Sculpture Prize, the talented Ramona Zoladek has begun to make a name for herself as one of the best young contemporary artists around. Her latest exhibition LOOP, which has been showing at Gallery North in Northumbria University, is just one of the pieces that Zoladek has created as part of her year long fellowship and it’s a perfect introduction to what her work is all about.

LOOP, like many of Zoladek’s works, focuses on the relationship between nature, architecture and objects in a dynamic sculptural format. Reflecting on and representing the ideas of growth and ruin, she uses materials commonly found in places like construction sites and builders’ merchant yards to form the basis of her pieces. The often cracked and worn materials that she finds are presented in ways that can simultaneously suggest both vulnerability and strength, with the solidity of the concrete and fluidity of the rubble playing off against one another. LOOP is a challenging and semi-experimental work from an artist who will no doubt go far. Hurry if you want to catch it though; it’s only on at Gallery North fr another week.

You can see Ramona Zoladek’s exhibition LOOP at Gallery North, Newcastle until Wednesday 7th October.
