Reliably informed

She might be most recognisable for her amazingly wild hair but Rae Morris is much more than just her enviable barnet. On her debut album Unguarded in January, she enlisted the help of Ariel Rechtshaid, Jim Eliot and Fryars to create an intriguing little pop record that was streets ahead of her contemporaries. She may have been – rather unkindly – compared to Ellie Goulding but don’t let that put you off; Morris is far more interesting and has a worldliness to her music that belies her young years.

Indeed, Morris all but outshines the current crop of melancholy balladeers with her impressive and elastic vocal range that soars in the live arena. The rather cavernous and experimental production on the record also becomes a beautiful haze when the Blackpudlian plays some of her solely piano-led tunes. If you think that Morris is all about uninspired, Coldplay-esque navel gazing, seeing her live might just change your mind.

Rae Morris comes to the O2 Academy, Newcastle on Sunday 4th October.
