Attention bookworms! From Saturday 11th March, the House of Illustration will present Quentin Blake: Inside Stories – a unique insight into the mind of one of the world’s best-known illustrators. The exhibition will offer insight into the origins of many iconic creations, including Roald Dahl classics The Twits and Danny the Champion of the World, and David Walliams’ best-seller The Boy in the Dress. It also features works for books by Russell Hoban, John Yeoman, and the infamous former Children’s Laureate Michael Rosen.
But don’t be fooled: despite the fact that his illustrations are aimed at a somewhat youthful target audience, this isn’t just one for the kids. Bringing together more than 100 pieces of wondrous illustration, the exhibition itself will showcase the wide range of different media – including inks, watercolours and pastels – demonstrating Blake’s multi-talented prowess as both an artist and an imaginative visionary. Plus, for those of you who are truly avid fans, it also includes first roughs and completed storyboards of finished artwork to demonstrate his evolution of ideas and beloved characters – a heavily collaborative process which often requires close work with the story’s author.
Showing throughout the summer until Saturday 8th July, this collection boasts arty fun for all the family – you’d be mad to miss it!
