Remember when you were younger and you’d get taken to a Punch and Judy show to keep you entertained for a little while on a Sunday afternoon? For many, including myself, this is probably what you think of when you think of the art of puppetry. Alphabetti Theatre don’t quite think that way though. Instead, they want to breathe new life into the art and show you that there’s more to puppets than sticking googly eyes on socks or beating up a crocodile with a little wooden bat.

Across the course of four Mondays, their eight-hour puppetry workshop will teach you everything you need to know about the basics. The first two sessions will see you learning how to make simple puppets and give some insight into how to bring them to life; the final two sessions will allow you to prepare for a performance with the puppets, using a specially written script for the workshops.

The sessions come to the Alphabetti thanks to Mythical Mechanical Monstrous Masterclasses (or 4M), a puppet theatre company who are looking to bring workshops to schools in the future with the help of the School of Social Enterpreneurs. But before the kids and teenagers are let loose with strings and templates, this is your chance to make your very own puppet. With all the materials provided, who can say no to the chance to take home your own nostalgic creation?

Puppetry Classes at the Alphabetti Theatre, Newcastle, begin on Monday 2nd March.
