A brief précis of the Profumo affair, for those not in the know: in 1963, between the end of the Chatterley ban and the Beatles’ first LP, the scandal broke of the affair between then Secretary of State for War John Profumo and the model Christine Keeler. A story made of a heady brew of illicit sex, generational divides and cold war paranoia, it became a media sensation who repercussions would lead to Profumo’s resignation and, more tragically, the suicide of socialite and friend of Keeler Stephen Ward.

All of which is to say: Profumo the band have their eyes set on something more ambitious than your typical indie pop crew. The jangling guitars and soft-focus melodies are all present, but in their lyrics and music there’s always the hint of something darker and stranger about to break through. Having released their debut EP Brutalism on the recently formed label Forgotten City Records over the summer, the quartet are now wetting the infant’s head with this headline performance at Cluny 2. Finding them mixing sunshine pop melodies with hints of classic Suede sleaze, Brutalism is a fine calling card for a band already on the search for bigger game – it’ll be interesting to hear how these songs have continued to evolve live.

Joining them on the night is a jam-packed roster of north-east talent. Opening proceedings is singer-songwriter Dean James and the psychedelic rock trio Crease, with the perennially brilliant and surrealist visions of therunningchelsea and the Hartlepool alt-pop act Antlez also joining the line-up to form an eclectic evening of music.

Profumo, Antlez, therunningchelsea and Dean James and Crease play at the Cluny 2, Newcastle on Monday 14th September.
