Reliably informed

Cobalt Studios’ mind-expanding, genre-fluid and pocket-friendly FRESH events (in which you get two stonkingly good live bands plus a plate of homemade scran for a mere fiver) continue apace this month, with an interesting event perfect for those interested in sonic exploration.

On Monday 3rd September Annie Lewandowski, aka Powerdove, experiments with sound, texture and form to create music which is diverse in style while still managing to be wholly listenable. The multi-instrumentalist, alongside fellow cohorts Thomas Bonvalet and Chad Popple, is currently on her fourth album, entitled War Shapes. From the Morse code-esque blasts of synths on the title track, Bone Deep’s scant instrumentation and Lion’s Den’s clatter of percussion and oddly struck strings, Lewandowski’s deceptively simple and sparse arrangements suck the listener into an often confusing world of sound, voice and noise which is utterly engrossing.

The trio will be supported by Newcastle’s own sonic adventurers, Mush, who peddle an eclectic blend of folk, pop and blues, and whose superb songwriting prowess seems to be getting better each time we hear them. They’re a real local gem, don’t miss them.
