As part of ¡VAMOS! and co-curated by Kiki Mazzucchelli, mima are celebrating Latin American culture by bringing works by three of Mexico’s best contemporary artists to Middlesbrough for two months. Also coinciding with “The Year of Mexico,” the works by Pia Camil, Pedro Reyes and Pablo Helguera are all artists interested in the themes of social and political reform, believing that art can be a mechanism for education and change.

Camil will be presenting hand-dyed curtains from the prominent Espectacular series, which has been running since 2012. In the series, she has reproduced abandoned billboards from Mexico City, giving the neglected and often derelict adverts new meaning in the modern age. Meanwhile, Pedro Reyes gained huge international attention for his work which turns weapons into musical instruments. For this exhibition, mima has commissioned Reyes to make new work as part of a musical performance with local choirs. Helguera will be recreating his celebrated work The Addams-Dewey Gymnasium, which invites visitors to engage in early 20th Century exercises to promote healthy living. All three works take on different forms and have vastly different messages but, combined, the trio shows off what contemporary Mexican art has to offer.

Pia Camil, Pablo Helguera and Pedro Reyes come to mima, Middlesbrough from Friday 5th June until Thursday 6th August.
