Reliably informed

The tones varied, objects and shapes delineated; such are the identifying aspects of the work of Paul Nash. The Paul Nash exhibition opens at The Laing Art Gallery from September 9th 2017 to January 14th 2018, arriving in the region from Tate Britain. The works form an incredible retrospective of Nash’s work, ranging from themes of nature and war, to interiors and book illustrations. The exhibition content will be a diverse narrative of Nash’s artistic achievements, diverse portfolio, and personal inspirations and struggles. Within the environment of Unit One (a founding member of a celebration of modernism in 1933), sees his paintings alongside contemporaries such as Edward Wadsworth, Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore.

From the destruction and desperate capturing of war, to the complexities of nature portrayed in his unique and strangely exaggerated natural landscapes; this exhibition promises to provide extraordinary insight into surrealism and an individual who historic experiences shaped the course of artistic progression and meaning.

As a revered war artist, covering both the world wars, his paintings are abstract, and yet their quality leaves you in no doubt that the artist is a man painting in painful awareness of the extremity of human conflict and suffering. The horrors inflicted by man, contrasted with beauty and life is a reality that still pervades society today. Nash will always act as a reminder and mirror in this stark recognition in painterly depiction, of the contrast between wartime and peace.

In art terms, his style evolved throughout his career, as did his artistic contributions. The exhibition is set to create a narrative of his life’s phases, as well as his creative inspirations, as demonstrated by the inclusion of photographs and strange objects used as a creative focus for Nash and Eileen Agar.

An explorer of cubism, abstraction and realism, as well as a being a vital part of the wave of modernism, and leader of surrealism, Paul Nash has an absorbing and evocative style that you would be well advised to reflect on and witness.
