The absurdist comedian comes to Tyneside
Paul Currie is not yet a household name, you may never have heard of him, but your children might have seen his work. He has been a lead puppeteer for the Cbeebies channel since 2007. Puppeteering, you might guess, features heavily in his act, which has been described as “the Monty Python version of stand up comedy.”
A quick visit to his homepage offered me the chance to see some of his work, which was visually enthralling. His comedy isn’t a laugh a minute, but it is very funny, and unlike some acts, accessible to everybody. He may look like a cross between Tony Law and Rufus Hound, but his act is all about body movement, facial expressions, backing tracks and props. I am intrigued enough by the snippets available on the web to make a trip to watch and learn (that’s the Cbeebies call-back).
Paul Currie comes to The Stand, Newcastle on Tuesday 24th March.
