Folk and country music has enjoyed quite the boom over the last few years, with revered though often not as well known as they should be songwriters finally getting a lot more of the recognition they deserve, and managing to reach new audiences. Patty Griffin is one of those, and the American singer-songwriter comes to Sage 2 on Friday 15th January.

A Grammy award winner in 2011 for the gospel influenced album Downtown Church, she’s achieved success for her lengthy time working in the music industry, a sign of the respect she’s gained is evident in the fact her songs often covered by her peers. It’ll be tracks from her latest and tenth album Servant Of Love that should be the main thrust of her set here. The songs are musically delicate and soft, allowing Griffin’s tender voice to deliver strong character driven narratives in the lyrics. She’s a masterful storyteller and any selection of songs across her varied back catalogue could make up an utterly enthralling set.

There’s a wise choice in support act too, as rising star Frankie Lee delivers his own take on Americana influenced alt-country, with guitars that sound distinctly rich in country music influences, and a voice that sounds like it’s lived a fair life so far, he’s another sincere songwriter who’ll open the room up perfectly for the amazing songstresss to follow.
