From Monday 13th June right through until Sunday 4th September, Tyneside Cinema is offering you the chance to be whisked away to some magical places as it showcases some of the best world cinema has to offer. Passport To Cinema hosts films from a different country every fortnight, and you can read more about it all here.

Their first offering is Italy and  Luchino Visconti’s masterpiece The Leopard opens it all up with screenings on Monday 13th and Tuesday 14th June. It’s then on to working class life being vividly represented in Rocco And His Brothers on Thursday 16th and Friday 17th June. The utterly beautiful Cinema Paradiso is up next, running from Saturday 18th until Monday 20th June, and the story which follows a filmmaker recalling his childhood, back to when he fell in love with the movies at his village’s theatre and formed a deep friendship with the theatre’s projectionist, could be one of the stand-outs of the whole season.

There’s something for the family too on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th June, as The Invisible Boy puts an original twist on the superhero movie. The penultimate film for the Italian section of Passport To Cinema is psychological thriller The Consequences Of Love on Monday 20th and Tuesday 21st June; before it’s all brought to a close by Bernado Bertolucci’s political masterpiece The Conformist on Wednesday 22nd and Thursday 23rd June. Italian cinema is the perfect first stamp on a passport around world cinema, and gives the future fortnights something to really live up to, though with some absolutely wonderful slices of cinema to come, you’ll be in for many more treats.

Passport To Cinema – Italy runs at Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle from Monday 13th until Thursday 23rd June.
