Tyneside Cinema‘s inventive Passport To Cinema gave people a chance to visit the best of Italian movie making over the last two weeks, and now it’s the turn of another of Europe’s finest film makers, France. From Friday 24th June until Tuesday 5th July, our neighbours across The Channel deliver a selection of absolute masterpieces.

It couldn’t get off to a better start, as Amélie shows all weekend. Quite simply one of the most beautiful films of all time,  after a few weeks where the world seems to have lost its tenderness, there are few films which could reaffirm faith in humanity like quite like this one. The modern classic features a stand-out performance from Audrey Tautou as the eponymous Amélie, in search for the recipe for true love and the way to help others find happiness.  It’s heart-swelling cinema at its very best.

The French portion of Passport To Cinema also offers up a French take on Beauty And The Beast in La Belle Et La Bete on Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th June; a UK Premiere for historical drama Francofonia on Friday 1st July; family fun with A Cat In Paris on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd July, while those same two days also feature revered thriller Diva. It’s all brought to a close by classic drama Vivre Sa Vie on Monday 4th and Tuesday 5th July.

There’s still Denmark, Thailand, and Brazil to come for Passport To Cinema, but for now, Vive la France!

Passport To Cinema – France runs at Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle from Friday 24th June until Tuesday 5th July.
