Durham’s Empty Shop HQ, while a community venue, is now really pushing on with also programming its own events. Their gig arm, Seagull and Circle, are carefully curating shows which are as much a social experience as they are a fantastic music one. Bringing the best of contemporary culture regionally, nationally and internationally, there’s a chance to see some incredible acts; just as you can on Thursday 25th February, as Paper Beat Scissors and Dressed Like Wolves are the next in line for a special showcase.

Canada based singer/songwriter Paper Beat Scissors is a truly mesmerising act, and he returns here as part of his European tour. A haunting voice, slipping in and out of delicate and intricate guitar playing is utterly beguiling, with music building and dropping in some truly clever folk influenced songwriting. The UK native has gone from strength to strength since moving to Canada, and his eponymous debut album has gained him both praise and attention.

With support coming from Thornaby’s Dressed Like Wolves, the local eccentrics have some delightfully twinkly and beautiful fuzzy pop songs played mostly on acoustic guitars and chord organs; their lo-fi folksy indie is a perfect addition to a really wonderfully put together show.
