Tuesday 17th May is International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOT); a worldwide celebration of sexual and gender diversities. It’s a day which will be celebrated the world over, and Newcastle marks it in style, with a special screening of the film Oriented, a feature length documentary that follows the lives of three gay Palestinian friends forced to confront their national and sexual identity in Tel Aviv, Israel.

This extraordinary film has been garnering much praise and rave reviews, telling the story of Khader, and his roots in a prominent Muslim mafia family whilst living with his Jewish boyfriend David and their dalmation Otis. Fadi meanwhile is an ardent Palestinian nationalist who finds himself falling in love with an Israeli “Zionist,” and the third narrative follows Naim, who must confront his family with the truth about his sexuality. Against the backdrop of a brewing war, all three men must confront their conflicting desires for change in a spin on a classic coming-of-age tale.

Oriented is at The Mining Institute, Newcastle on Tuesday 17th May.
