Reliably informed

The people behind Once Upon A Tyne are looking for writers to submit short plays, poetry and short stories to be performed at a live event in Newcastle. This will be Once Upon A Tyne’s opening night and the organisers are looking to get a range of submissions from a variety of authors regardless of geographical location. The emphasis is on good quality spoken word and generally interesting writing.

The organisers are looking for a range of material that is inventive and original; it could be specifically grounded in the region or unusual enough to grab the attention of an audience. They encourage all people submitting to go out of their comfort zones and not “play it safe” with their material; instead, they are looking to generate a lively debate around the themes and issues explored in the works and present challenging material to the audience.

As a rough guide, people looking to submit work to the considered for the night should write roughly to the following guidelines for content:

  • Script submissions should be 20 pages maximum (for a fully formed short play)
  • Poetry – around 5-10 poems
  • Prose – 5-10 pages

The aim is to support and develop writers who wish to test their material in front of an audience.

Pieces must be submitted by Sunday 30th November.

More information on the night can be found at Once Upon A Tyne’s website.
