Regional folk heroes The Unthanks are accustomed to playing grand venues revered for their folk credentials and superb production. On Friday 14th February however, they’re stripping back their stage show for an intimate and very special performance at Cobalt Studios. The venue’s second OFFGRID event will shroud the stage in candlelight, and no electricity will be used throughout the premises.

Venue owner Kathryn Hodgkinson explains their thinking behind the event. “Firstly it was borne of a real desire to create a focused environment for distilled music with zero distractions, but it’s also very much a nod to current politics of greed/excess versus simplicity and, of course, also to climate change and a gentle enquiry into what music means without power.”

For The Unthanks, it’s a testament to their musical talent and versatility that such a gig is possible; captivating a crowd at close quarters on the strength of their stage presence and outstanding back catalogue alone. Support comes from the Thomas Dixon Trio, who will be performing a set of improvised, acoustic, free form music. Part of the Newcastle Improvisers’ Workshop, the saxophonist will be joined by Ben Fitzgerald on drums and Tom Alcornon on trumpet and their performance will have no set list, no plan and no limitations.
