A favourite book for so many, Of Mice and Men is a treasured piece of literature for a lot of people, often discovering it during a stuffy GCSE class; the beautifully rich text just as relevant today as it was when it was first released in 1937. John Steinbeck’s writing jumps off the page, so it lends itself perfectly to a theatrical performance; with a play adapted from the novel running at Darlington Civic Theatre from Tuesday 15th until Saturday 19th March.

The story of George and Lennie, set against the backdrop of America’s Great Depression, is one which really strikes a chord; the two migrant farm workers in search of opportunity and new beginnings, yearning to put enough money aside for a small piece of land and a place to call home. Their tiring and troublesome journey builds to an almighty climax and is brought to life by an incredible array of acting talent, all assembled by Touring Consortium Theatre Company and Birmingham Repertory Theatre.

With a cast featuring TV stars and renowned stage actors like Dudley Sutton, this touching play pays complete respect to the original work, while vivaciously breathing new life into it. For some, it’s a chance to fall in love with the adventures of George and Lennie all over again; and for other’s, discover one of the 20th Century’s greatest tales for the very first time.

Of Mice and Men is at Darlington Civic Theatre from Tuesday 15th until Saturday 19th March.
