If I were to say to you ‘Shrove Tuesday’ you will probably think of pancakes, a squeeze of lemon and perhaps a little too much sugar. Debauchery middle England style. Now, transport that same celebration 4,600 miles west and a bit south and you have MARDI GRAS! Debauchery Louisiana style! Now you’ll be thinking of garlands, massive alcohol consumption, painted faces, colour, and most importantly, brass bands.

As much as I love a pancake, phat brass and dancing like a new-born mandrill with Labyrinthitis sounds way more fun. Speaking of funky monkeys, the New(castle) Orleans vibe will be channelled through the immensely talented Northern Monkey Brass Band, regular beasts of the hallowed Hoochie Coochie stage. Their set will be anything but regular though, and along with some belting originals and clever covers the Mardi Gras extravagance will be brought to you at a fraction of the cost of a transatlantic flight. This is going to be a no-holds-barred celebration of abandonment and unrestrained merriment, so if you’re feeling a bit crêpe after Christmas, bring a little colour into your life and get struttin’ at the Hooch on Friday 12th February.

Northern Monkey Brass Band’s Mardi Gras special is at Hoochie Coochie, Newcastle on Friday 12th February.
