Get ready to welcome a new addition to the North East calendar. No Sleep ‘Til Scotland is a showcase of performance poetry, taking place at the Alphabetti Theatre on New Bridge Street, which will prep performers for the craziness that is the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

A jam-packed programme on Saturday 1st August will cram in nine spoken word shows from 11am until 11pm. And in keeping with Alphabetti’s passion for developing artists, regional performers will be rubbing shoulders with multiple-award-winning veterans of the scene.

The line-up – curated by spoken word supporters Apples & Snakes in a brand new partnership with Alphabetti – will include 2014 BBC Slam Champion David Lee Morgan alongside headline act and Saboteur Awards winner Sophia Walker. Jenni Pascoe, founder of Jibba Jabba, which takes place every month at the Cumberland Arms, will be kicking things off with her new piece, while other performances will transport audiences across a staggering variety of styles and subjects, from dark literary fairy tales to scathing political satires.

The mammoth 12-hour extravaganza has a ‘drop-in’ festival format so that, in the mind-boggling event that one show doesn’t take your fancy, you can simply take a break at the outdoor buskers’ stage, enjoy an open mic session or grab a bite to eat. Sounds like sheer poetry to us.
