An impressive selection of internationally renowned poets from across the globe gather in Newcastle this March for the International Poetry Festival – a celebration of contemporary poetry and a pretty big deal in terms of literature.

The festival takes place at Northern Stage in Newcastle from Thursday 19th until Saturday 21st March, where a whole host of readings, presentations and discussions have been scheduled. Poet, novelist, playwright and contributor to The Guardian and The Independent, Sean ‘O’ Brian will open the festival on Thursday 19th, with the launch of his latest poetry collection, The Beautiful Librarians. It’s free, but be sure to book your place in advance as this will be a hugely popular one. Among the other poets who will be taking up a platform and sharing their literary genius with us are Michael Longley, who received the 2001 Queen’s Gold Medal Award for Poetry; Anne Stevenson, who in 2007 was awarded the Lannan’s Lifetime Achievement Prize; and Mark Doty, author of the New York Times Best Seller, Dog Years. Over the course of the festival there will be the opportunity to hear from a whole range of poets of all walks of life, including Jamie Mckendrick, George Szrites, Kei Miller, Susan Wicks and Rebecca Parry. Don’t forget your pen and paper, these guys are bound to get your creative juices flowing.
