Newcastle’s DIY scene, in defiantly rude health of late in spite of the financial challenges it faces, has found a new home in the basement of Travelling Man Comics on Newcastle’s Grainger Street. Like its brilliant forebear the Star and Shadow Cinema, Nerd Hutch is run by volunteers. These include artist and Skull Puppies frontman Jack Fallows, chiptune punk Euan Lynn and musician/cartoonist Andrew Lips, all of whom run the venue with the same fire that ignites their artistic endeavours. They’re fiercely passionate about creating a safe, ethical space for the DIY community with all events free to book and attend.

Since opening, the venue has already seen killer shows from the likes of Furrow and Playlounge and is strengthening with every week. November saw its calendar at its fullest yet, and with exciting events popping up at a minute’s notice, you’d be wise to keep an eye on the Nerd Hutch Facebook page to keep up to date. One particularly interesting event already planned takes place on Saturday 6th December and features Bison Hunting, Massa Confusa, Skull Puppies and Ghurst.

It’s another resource we as a city are lucky to have, particularly in these trying times, and it’s clear that the people at the heart of Nerd Hutch believe in looking after us, so let’s look after them too.
