Once upon a time, the humble market town of Darlington was praised for its charming architecture, interesting history and perhaps trains too, and right now, there is somewhat of a revival of fortunes within the cobbled streets.

With wildly popular weekly events such as Soapbox Sessions and Jukebox showcasing astonishing regional talent, it’s about time the down had a proper all-day music extravaganza. All hail Music Box Festival, an incredible hodgepodge of artists from every nook and cranny of the North East and slightly beyond, which is guaranteed to peg Darlington onto the map.

The event, which graces the town on Sunday 5th June, will be held across several venues, all brimming to the seams with the most innovative and exciting acts of the area, such as Newcastle’s glamorous, filthy four-piece Velvoir, the energetic alt. rock pairing of Mouses, soulful solo act Ryan Spendlove and the intensely brooding outfit Goy Boy McIlroy, fronted by one of the event organisers, David Saunders. The man behind several of the exciting developments occurring through Darlo’s cultural belt: “It’s been an exciting year for music in my hometown, and it’s been great to be able to acknowledge this with a festival that oozes quality.”

With over 20 live bands to immerse yourself in, the day is assured to be one of tremendous talent and society spirit, and with ticket prices as dinky as three Great British Pounds, you would be silly to not partake. A definite shove in an intriguing direction, the event will hopefully serve as an acceleration towards the place Darlington is capable of becoming, which it has so often dipped its toe in, but never quite taken the full plunge.

Music Box Festival takes place at Avalon, Hole In The Wall and Hash in Darlington on Sunday 5th June.
