Reliably informed

We’ve dusted off our party hats and got our party poppers at the ready; incredibly it’s a whole ten years since Mushroom Works, one of the tent poles of Newcastle/Ouseburn’s creative scene, opened up and began supporting some of the North East’s best artists and designers. They’ll be treating visitors to some rather delicious cakes at their January Super Sale (Saturday 31st January and Sunday 1st February), a precursor to a year-long programme of festivities.

Mushroom Works is home to a community of artists who work in-studio day-in and day-out across the year. While many of them can be visited upon appointment, this is a rare opportunity to pick up some of their incredible work at a cut-rate price, with fantastic paintings, furniture, pottery, textiles and jewellery slashed by up to 70%.

Some of our personal favourites include Muddy Fingers Pottery, a.k.a. Marv and Diane, who excel in creating handy specialist homeware for a variety of nifty uses, and Joanne Wishart whose striking acrylic paintings of the North East coast are full of character and a quirky seaside sense of humour.

While the huddled masses queued outside Next at 6am on Boxing Day, you’d have been much better off, and more sensible, to hold on and grab something unique at this bargain-filled birthday bonanza.

The Mushroom Works Super January Sale takes place between Saturday 31st January and Sunday 1st February.
