Reliably informed

The story of graffiti-artist-turned-graphic-designer Muro Buro is a long and particularly interesting tale. To keep things relatively concise, Muro Buro – otherwise known as Newcastle native Paul Robson – began his career as a graffiti artist in 1990, from which his passion for all things typographical blossomed into a full-blown love affair. His love of typefaces drew him to the only typography course in the UK at the London Institute in the late 90s and after that he began working as a designer on the cult fashion and lifestyle magazine Sleazenation.

Fast forward a few years and Muro Buro has made his name as one of the world’s best illustrators. His bold works consisting of hand-drawn typefaces are often reminiscent of his early days as a graffiti artist but also combine with his work as a graphic designer for advertisers. While people who love fonts might often be sniggered at Muro Buro’s work proves that there’s a real artistic beauty in the typefaces we use everyday, giving words on paper an even more beautiful look. His week-long exhibition at SOLO Arts will be a rare opportunity to see his works in the flesh, as they’re often shown at galleries in Europe and the US. You might not look at your standard word processor the same way again.

Muro Buro’s exhibition comes to SOLO Arts at Holmeside Coffee, Sunderland from Monday 27th to Friday 31st July.
