For female writers, Mslexia magazine is a must read. The quarterly publication, which is based in Newcastle, helps female writers progress their work and find a path into print. Aimed at budding scribes as well as established authors, it’s become an essential guide for women interested in stretching their creativity.

It makes sense then, that their newly created series of Spotlight events would shine a light on women writers and literary stars. Their second event takes place at Newcastle’s Jazz Café on Thursday 3rd March, and features an open mic slot for new writers to showcase their work alongside readings from established and respected authors. Readings will be performed by the associate editor of Newsweek Cathy Galvin, who was also the guest editor of the magazine’s December issue, and director of Word Factory, which highlights talented short story writers at their regular events. She’ll be joined by writer, spoken word artist and multidisciplinary artist Malika Booker and poet Lisa Matthews.
