As the north east’s premier platform for highlighting and engaging with women writers, Mslexia have built up a strong reputation for spotting talent from a mile away, introducing us to some amazing writers through their tireless work. For those of us who want a bit more of a personal, engaging poetry experience, though, Mslexia have decided to run a new series of Spotlight events which will give women writers the opportunity to read their work to an audience, listen to others and mingle in a relaxed, friendly and inclusive community.

The first event, taking place near Newcastle Arts Centre, already has a host of established poets lined up to read their work. Carolyn Jess-Cooke, Gillian Allnutt, Linda France and Aileen Ballantyne – the winner of Mslexia’s 2015 poetry competition – will all be sharing their verses with a captive audience. After that, it’s up to the audience to provide the rhymes and weave the tales with the open mic portion of the evening. If you’re a budding poet and want to showcase some of your talent on the evening, make sure you get in touch to express your interest; names will be drawn at random on the night in the hope that as many people as possible get the chance to perform. Who knows, you might be discovered as the next potential Poet Laureate.

The Mslexia Spotlight evening of poetry will take place at the Black Swan Bar & Venue in Newcastle on Wednesday 23rd September.
