Tyneside seems to have become a solid fixture on the Moon Duo touring schedule these days, which is a wonderful thing if you can’t get enough of their lysergic glam-racket gnostic stomp (and let’s face it, who can?)
This time out they’re promoting their new album Occult Architecture Vol. 1 (out now on the increasingly indispensable Sacred Bones label), which takes the reliably excellent Moon Duo sound, built around Ripley Johnson’s remarkable, fluid guitar and Sanae Yamada’s Nuggets-meets-Conny Plank keyboards, and adds a little more electronics than usual and also throws in some high concept darkness to boot (as borne out by titles like Cold Fear and The Death Set). As the first instalment in a two-album series for 2017, it’s a goth-informed but unmistakeably immediate and hypnotic listen. (Presumably, Vol. 2 will dwell on the lighter side of the band’s yin / yang duality and be full of daytime radio friendly, spring break sound tracking tropical house bangers. Ahem.)
Their show Northumbria University on Wednesday 15th March opens their spring tour of the UK, with support acts set to be announced shortly. Moon Duo shows are always pretty special, so come join them on the shady side of the hill.
