Reliably informed

Of all the reasons for leaving a band after eight years and four albums, claiming that he left Rob Heron & The Tea Pad Orchestra because “as the band got bigger it got really hard to keep up with all the ironing” might be the best. So Ben Fitzgerald (hailing from the west of Scotland but a long time Newcastle resident) has transformed – by way of someone mishearing his name – into Memphis Gerald, whose self-titled debut EP is released this month.

Fitzgerald has always written his own songs, but other projects tended to take precedence, so this is the first time his own material – in this case, all written in the last year – has properly seen the light of day. His Facebook page describes his music as indie folk, which doesn’t really do justice to the range of influences he brings to his songs, where elements of country, gospel, Cajun, jazz and blues mix with the folk sound (due in part to his guitar style and gentle Scottish burr). The EP was recorded with a full band (including some of his Tea Pad compadres) and they’ll be joining Fitzgerald for his EP launch gig at Cobalt Studios on Friday 27th September. There are also rumours of a collaboration with Jayne Dent of the wonderful Me Lost Me, so look out for that too.
