Reliably informed

Originally a member of five-piece Welsh band Race Horses, Meilyr Jones shines as a soloist on his debut record 2013. Splicing together his classical, rock and poetic influences, he has birthed a record that stays true to the individuality of his persona.

Echoes of the blunt lyricisms of Kate Bush appear on Jones’ latest single Featured Artist, and are paired brilliantly with a horn section that Florence & The Machine would be proud of, while the striking piano ballad Refugees is reminiscent of the sound and vibrato of Antony & The Johnsons. On tracks such as Passionate Friend and Rome, the strum of the electric guitar is married harmoniously with the classical chimes of the pan flute or harpsichord to create a fusion of classical pop that works wonders.

Jones has an eclectic range of interests, from Byronic poetry and his time ingesting the art of Rome to the more tacky side of life and karaoke. With his Tudor haircut, sharp sense of style and vocal full of simplistic meaning and range, Jones promises a weird and wonderful show at The Cluny 2 on Monday 2nd May.

Meilyr Jones plays The Cluny 2, Newcastle on Monday 2nd May.
