Visitors to the original ‘New Castle’ upon Tyne will be able to get whisked back in time for free Medieval yuletide celebrations at the Castle Keep and Black Gate from Friday 12th to Sunday 14th December. Expect music, food, drink and codpieces a-plenty.

Olde worlde entertainment will be on offer to rival even the most unmissable Christmas TV schedule and will include The Moss Troopers, a roving trio of storytellers, historians, entertainers and fools (their words not ours), who will perform heart-stopping tales of knightly deeds and gruesomeness on the first of the three days, while musician Paul Martin will be employing authentic medieval instruments to demonstrate some of the most renowned medieval chart-toppers. If you’ve ever fancied trying your hand at the arts of chivalry, you’ll be able to get a grip on sword fighting with a little help from the Black Gate Combat Academy (named after the Castle’s ancient barbican tower, opening as a swanky new visitor attraction in the spring).

The centrepiece will be a medieval-themed market, with an abundance of delicately crafted treats to taste and buy. And if you’d like to add that personal touch, there’ll be demonstrations in near-forgotten arts such as lace-making and wool-spinning. Beats a last minute dash for cheapo stocking fillers at Poundstretcher, we’d say.

The Medieval Christmas Market takes place at the Castle Keep, Newcastle from Friday 12th until Sunday 14th December.
