The old saying “don’t judge a book by its cover” can easily be applied to band names. Mechanical Mouse Organ might sound like they’d be tinkling on a piano and churning out twee ditties akin to a modern theme tune for Sylvanian Families. But no. The Newcastle four-piece actually create a distinctive mash of classic and alternative rock and, after a successful debut gig at the Dog and Parrot in October, they’re bringing their tunes to the Central Bar in Gateshead on Saturday 31st January.

MMO are actually comprised of three members of HUG, a band who were championed by the NME in 1991 and released 2 EPs on Kitchenware Records in the early nineties, touring with the likes of Pavement. The new band is now fronted by Daryl Todd and explores a rougher, harder side of rock. Taking inspiration from everyone from The Who to The Raconteurs, MMO are a band with a brilliant pedigree.

They’re joined on the night by The Smokin’ Coconuts, a Gogol Bordello-esque troupe who deal in what they call World Punk. The sleazy cocktail mixes together reggae, calypso and klezmer in a super-potent concoction that’s likely to get you drunk on noise.

Mechanical Mouse Organ and The Smokin’ Coconuts play at the Central Bar, Gateshead on Saturday 31st January.
