After flooring the critics and giving the Royal Exchange in Manchester their fastest-selling show in a decade, Sarah Francom’s modern dress and radically reimagined take on the classic, tragic tale of the Prince of Denmark is now arriving as a new filmed version screening at 200 cinemas across the UK in March.

After Hamlet’s father is murdered by his own brother Claudius, Hamlet is consumed by grief and seeks revenge against the uncle who has not only seized the throne but married the wife of the deceased king too. Murder, madness, betrayal, love, loyalty and more are all thrown into the heady mix with devastating consequences in this unforgettable new take on the play which has enthralled audiences for centuries.

Following in the footsteps of Asta Nielsen, Frances de la Tour, Sarah Bernhardt and the recent Angela Winkler, Maxine Peake arrives as the latest gender-swapped incarnation of the titular Prince in this stripped-back, stark, and impressively staged production. The spry, mesmerising Peake is joined by Gillian Bevan as Polonia, Jodie McNee as Rosencrantz, Claire Benedict as the Player King, and a rolled-up jumper as court jester Yorick’s iconic skull. A Hamlet for the 21st century indeed.

You can see Maxine Peake as Hamlet at the Tyneside Cinema, Newcastle on Monday 23rd March.
