Dancing In The Street changed Motown and soul music forever. When it was first released in 1964, it was unlike anything Motown had ever produced. It was funkier, with a fat bass line and explosive drums. Written by Marvin Gaye but performed by the latest American girl vocal group, without it there would arguably be no disco music, and it went on to become the Northern soul template.

Lucky for us SSD Concerts (who are also promoting this summer’s Live From Times Square shows in Newcastle) and Gigs North East bring soul legends Martha Reeves & The Vandellas to the newly refurbished Georgian Theatre in Stockton on Tuesday 20th June, where we will be able to hear it belted out for real by the ultimate soul diva herself.

During Martha’s time with The Vandellas, they scored a further dozen hit singles, including Nowhere To Run, Heatwave, Third Finger Left Hand and Jimmy Mack. After leaving Motown in 1972, Martha continued to expand her musical horizons but continues to perform with her Vandellas – sisters Lois (Motown-era Vandella since 1967) and Delphine (since the mid-80s).

Martha is no stranger to Stockton, of course, having performed at Stockton Weekender in 2014 alongside Happy Mondays and Public Enemy but this should prove to be a much more intimate and distinguished affair.
