Dubbed ‘the greatest show and tell on earth’, Maker Faire aren’t about to take you back to the heady days of horrible school dinners and playground bullies. Instead, their event at Life Science Centre on Saturday 23rd-Sunday 24th April aims to celebrate invention and creativity, with a healthy dose of weird thrown in for good measure.

Over 300 makers, crafters, hackers, coders and inventors from around the world will converge on Newcastle, all in the name of discovery. Headliners like the Lords of Lightning will demonstrate the powers of the Tesla Coil with five metre bolts of lightning; the future of transport is on show thanks to Dominic Wilcox’s clever Stained Glass Car (pictured); and Jason Lane’s Mechanical Sound Sculpture was previously seen at the closing ceremony of the 2012 Paralympics.

There will also be lectures from personalities as diverse as feminist gaming rabble-rouser Phoenix Perry; software designer, disaster consultant and global resilience visionary Vinay Gupta; and the Rowland Emett Society, whose works are dedicated to the life of the Punch cartoonist, artist and inventor.

Other makers of note include Paper Jam Comics Collective, WiFi robotics experts Mirobot, engineers and lighting experts Superpants, Jam Jar Collective and wearable tech from artist Helen Schell.

Maker Faire takes place at Life Science Centre, Newcastle on Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th April.
