Reliably informed

The first ever North East staging of Caryl Churchill’s stimulating and insightful new play Love and Information is to be presented at Northern Stage on Thursday 1st June and Saturday 3rd June by graduating Northumbria University Performance students.

The production inventively mirrors the constantly and rapidly changing age in which we live, with 16 actors playing more than 100 characters in 57 scenes. We’re used to information overload though, aren’t we? That’s the point – we live in a world where we’re bombarded with information and opinion all of the time.

This highly intelligent piece of theatre is a thrilling kaleidoscope of (you guessed it) love and information, where seemingly inconsequential moments are presented alongside moments of life-changing significance. For such is life: fractured and fragmented, at times inexplicably absurd.

Each of the 57 scenes in Churchill’s Love and Information reveal in a distinct way how we don’t always know how to cope with the information available to us. There’s an erosion of memory, privacy and feeling, as speed of communication is replacing human connection. At times, Churchill’s world view is very funny. It’s also intensely touching, and yet uncomfortable with a lasting sense of unease – both personally and politically.

This powerful and provocative presentation of society will reflect the experience of each audience member in some way, for we are not all so very different: in an age where we have come to expect and rely on continual access to more and more information, the question remains – ‘Where is the love?’

Love and Information is at Northern Stage, Newcastle on Thursday 1st and Saturday 3rd June.
