Los Campesinos! are returning to Newcastle for the first time in five years with a date at The Cluny on Sunday 30th April, and what a rags to riches to rags to riches story it has been.

Next year will mark a decade since the band first enjoyed chart success with their twee-core debut record, Hold On Now, Youngster… and the royalties that came with You! Me! Dancing! and that accompanying beer advert.  Broody follow-ups We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed and Romance Is Boring received critical acclaim, but the band never quite achieved the success they deserved.  Band members came and went and by the time of their best record, Hello Sadness, lead singer Gareth was selling t-shirts from a shed in his back garden.

Restricted to tours around the North-West so they could be back at work the next day, the band struggled on with 2013’s excellent No Blues before a hiatus.  It seemed like it could be the end for the band, but – like Leicester City – they rose from relegation contenders to champions with a brand new label, deal and American tour, culminating in the release of Sick Scenes in February.  If you love your indie full of footballing metaphors for broken romances, then don’t miss out.
