Take it from someone who knows, putting on large-scale outdoor gigs is no piece of cake. SSD Concerts, the promoters behind Newcastle’s Live From Times Square gigs, obviously aren’t afraid to take a punt and if last year’s successful events are anything to go by they’re onto a winning formula.

They’ve already kicked off their summer season of events with appearances from Jake Bugg, James and Leftfield, and their August line-up is as eclectic as it is impressive. Kicking things off on Thursday 3rd August are indie rock scamps The Libertines and, love ‘em or hate ‘em, there’s no denying that the band have a somewhat shambolic charm. If you like your indie rock with added scissor kicks you’ll be pleased to note local lads Maximo Park are the main support act, while opening the night will be indie punkers BlackWaters.

Friday 4th August sees Hacienda Classical take the stage with an it-shouldn’t-work-but-it-does classical-meets-acid house collaboration between FAC 51 The Hacienda and Manchester Camerata, the city’s experimental orchestra. Another coup for Newcastle comes in the form of Welsh alt. rockers Manic Street Preachers, who perform on Saturday 5th August; the band can always be relied upon for a solid performance, and with support slots from Yorkshire indie rockers The Cribs and audio visual duo Public Service Broadcasting, a night of guitar-heavy anthems is on the cards.

Surely the gig of the month has to come from the legend that is Brian Wilson, with the former Beach Boy playing the band’s seminal Pet Sounds in full on Sunday 6th August. The supports are pretty special too, with bluesman Seasick Steve and the inimitable Martha Reeves & The Vandellas providing ample reason to grab a ticket quick-smart.

Live From Times Square takes place at Times Square, Newcastle from Thursday 23rd until Sunday 6th August.
