Reliably informed

Art galleries: places filled with wonder, intrigue and, occasionally, a bit of puzzlement (in a good way, of course). Step inside those rooms and you’ll be transported to a different place and possibly even a different time by the works inside. Although, come to think of it, that’s only in the exhibition rooms themselves. What about the rest of the gallery? What have we got to look forward to there?

Commissioned to respond to the works of Victor Pasmore and Richard Hamilton in the 1950s and 60s, Newcastle University alumni Laurence Kavanagh has produced a new piece of art work to be displayed in the Hatton Gallery’s glass entrance. Working with the Star & Shadow co-operative, Kavanagh has created a sculptural cinema screen, examining the relationship between the space that we inhabit and the imagined film we can see from different angles reflected on the screen. If you’re entering the Hatton Gallery any time soon, you might have to muscle your way past a few extra bodies looking at the wonders of Kavanagh’s work.

Laurence Kavanagh’s commision comes to the Hatton Gallery, Newcastle from Saturday 19th September to Sunday 28th February 2016.
