It’s said that collaboration is the key to innovation, and no one knows that better than musician and composer Laura Jurd. Having been nominated for a Mercury music prize in 2017 with her jazz quartet Dinosaur, Jurd’s effortless fusion of electronica, groove-filled folk, jazz and pop has led to thrilling compositions and surprising improvisations.

An artist utterly unafraid to leap out of her comfort zone, Jurd spearheads what’s set to be a fantastical collection of sounds, featuring exciting new voices in both the improvisational and contemporary music scene from across Norway and the UK, in her event at Sage Gateshead on Sunday 3rd March.

Entitled Stepping Back, Jumping In, Jurd and her Dinosaur bandmates lead a dynamic 14-piece ensemble, teaming up with contemporary string specialists Ligeti Quartet, acclaimed Norwegian tuba and electronics duo Heida Mobeck and Anja Lauvdal and British/Iranian composer Soosan Lolavar – as well as a host of UK-based master improvisers – to present a series of brand new works which will be aired for the first time, allowing various members of the ensemble to showcase new compositions. With such a charismatic and innovative sonic core, there’s no doubt this will be a night filled with inventive and eclectic sounds.
