Having visited the venue on numerous occasions and even curated their own Lau-Land festival there back in 2014, Sage Gateshead must feel like a home away from home for acclaimed folk trio Lau. It’s little wonder then that Wednesday 6th December sees Kris Drever, Martin Green and Aidan O’Rourke call by once more, this time with a retrospective celebrating a decade performing together. And what a decade…

One of the contemporary scene’s most celebrated outfits, Lau’s renowned live shows and rapturously received recordings have seen them capture no less than four Best Group gongs at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards – and that’s before you even consider the wealth of accolades they’ve collected as individuals.

Of course, music is no competition, and all the prizes in the world would be worthless without a dedicated following. As such, it seems appropriate that listeners have helped shape the tour’s setlist, with the accompanying Decade (The Best Of 2007–2017) compilation pitting fan selections alongside those of manager Tom Rose and the band members themselves. Housed in the intimate surrounds of Hall Two, the two-part exhibit of hypnotic, adventurous and accomplished musicianship promises to be a late highlight of the live calendar. If you’re yet to discover the delights of Lau, this could well prove as good a starting point as any!
