So then, The Head of Steam’s had a lick of paint. They’ve changed the bar, got a new colour scheme, some fancy new windows at the front. But it can’t be the Steam without a bit of dirt, without something of the dark side to it.

Thank goodness then that the gods of gig bookings have decided to bless the recently re-opened downstairs venue with this ideally matched double header on Saturday 5th September that looks set to bring the atmosphere back. Having wowed audiences at Evolution Emerging and NARC Fest earlier this year, for this headline performance they’ll be bringing their debut album The Mountain Ghost to full life, performing the entire album in sequence along with a special visual presentation. Blending stomping stoner riffs, exploratory prog moves (most evident in the band’s use of Hammond organ) and post-rock grandeur, their slowly evolving soundscapes push at a baroque grandeur without straying too far into muso showcasing.

Before them, it’s that most powerful of power trio’s, Blown Out. Having recently performed at the Reverence festival in Portugal alongside luminaries such as Sleep and Amon Duul II and with an astonishingly prolific release schedule that shows no signs of slowing down, Blown Out are a band on a roll. With Matt Baty’s thundering drums and John-Michael Hedley’s deep bass grooves providing the insistent backdrop, Mike Vest’s guitar explorations push their psych-rock improvisations all the way into the darkest, deepest parts of space. It’s a formula, sure, but a rather brilliant one.

Kylver and Blown Out play at the Head of Steam, Newcastle on Saturday 5th December.
