The Coen Brothers’ Oscar-winning black comedy-drama Fargo is one of the most celebrated films of the past twenty years. It’s brilliant memorable, featuring a perfectly-pitched performance from Frances McDormand and some creepy yet somehow hilarious situations (just think of Steve Buscemi being fed through the woodchipper). But what if you thought it was all real?

Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter is a peculiar but wonderfully original film based on the urban legend of a Japanese woman (played by Rinko Kikuchi) who discovers a hidden copy of Fargo and, believing it to be a documentary, becomes gradually obsessed with it. Thinking that the tape might be a treasure map, she travels from her Tokyo home to Minnesota in the hope that she can find the buried cash from the Coens’ classic. The twisted fairy tale has been almost unanimously praised snce its release on the festival circuit and is essential viewing for fans of Japanese film and the Coens.

Kumiko, the Treasure Hunter screens at the Tyneside Cinema on Friday 27th February.
