The KOAN series of events at The Globe has provided a space for fascinating collaborations and performances, with an emphasis on improvisation and artistic freedom. The latest instalment on Saturday 17th March, Koan 7 – Form And Space continues this tradition with another eclectic and exciting bill.

Headlining the event are The Lightwaves Museum, whose airy and free-form take on psychedelic rock and German art-rock was last seen in full effect support Damo Suzuki at The Cluny 2 last summer. Their entirely improvisational sets balance driving motorik rhythms with loose, cascading guitar and synth explorations to often entrancing effect.

One of the most intriguing new acts in the area, Mobius (the duo of James Watts and Skylar Gill) offer warped vocal loops and doom-laden harmonies that explore the spaces and interactions between folk tradition, extreme metal forms and electronic manipulation. Cooking With Three are a mixed-media free-improvisational troupe – quite what form their KOAN performance will take is impossible to predict, but expect some unrepeatable delights. Completing the bill is local bassist and composer John Pope, known for his work in Archipelago, Twin Beam, The John Pope Quintet among other groups and here appearing in a solo guise. Hats off to the organisers of KOAN for another ambitious, thoughtful line-up.
