Reliably informed

It’s hard to believe that Oldham-born Kiran Leonard is only 17, especially when his latest offering Bowler Hat Soup isn’t even his debut effort. The singer-songwriter might, whisper it very quietly, be Britain’s answer to Beck. He plays his own instruments, bends genres like it’s nobody’s business and manages to make his songs sound brilliantly meaty and filled with scrumptious ideas that break the usual mould of the singer-songwriter.

Leonard, in a nutshell, is more like Frank Zappa than Frank Turner, describing Bowler Hat Soup as “a hexadecagonal pseudo-fortress of occasionally caustic and semi-illiterate pop nonsense”. He plays no less than 22 instruments on the record, including a grill, and his talent sometimes veers on the scarily savantic. It’ll be very interesting to see him attempting to recreate his complex one-man sound in a live environment. More than anything, his set at The Cumberland Arms will be a chance to see a young talent before he goes stratospheric.

Kiran Leonard will play at The Cumberland Arms, Newcastle on Thursday 19th March.
