This year marks the tenth anniversary of Newcastle’s biggest celebration of Spanish and Portuguese culture, ¡Vamos! Festival. After a decade of bringing some of the best Latino culture has to offer the city, the organisers are pulling out all the stops this year between Thursday 4th and Sunday 14th June, bringing music legends Kid Creole and the Coconuts to Tyneside to headline the event. Kid Creole himself, otherwise known as August Darnell, said: “we’re excited to be headlining the tenth ¡Vamos! Festival – it’s an amazing multicultural carnival and we’re looking forward to it.”

Organiser Nik Barrera commented: “We’re extremely excited about our line-up for this year, and we’re delighted to have Kid Creole and the Coconuts hosting our Summer Evening Party on Saturday, June 13th, with a special Latino set. And we’ve a vast array of other artists and attractions lined up to make sure we get the biggest audiences we’ve ever had – we’ve even got a special fiesta for chocolate-lovers.”

This year the festival is permanently taking over the former Venue nightclub in the city, where just some of the festival’s events will take place. Across the ten days you can expect more Mexican wrestling, Peruvian street artists, Mardi Gras partygoers, world music premieres, flamenco dancers and a delicious Daytime Picnic on Saturday 13th June.

If you’re a cinephile, there’s even more to float your boat as cult Argentinian icon Isabel Sarli is praised with screenings of The Female, while there will be a free series filled with low-budget “Mexploitation” films from the 60s and 70s. There will also be a host of street artists and a takeover of the Stephenson Boiler Shop, with an album launch from Gran Canaria flamenco artist Paco Behtencourt.

After a decade of festivals, ¡Vamos! still stands as the north east’s leading celebration of Latino culture and this year’s events are no different. Get set for some fiery Latino pizazz.

¡Vamos! Festival takes place between Thursday 4th and Sunday 14th June.
