As with so many mental health illnesses, there are many stereotypes surrounding OCD – Obsessive Compulsive Disorder – but little actually known about what it really means to live with the disorder. As a society, we often describe people or even hear people describe themselves as “having OCD” or “a being a little OCD” for reasons like keeping a tidy house or double checking that the front door is locked, but society is wrong do this. The reality of the disorder is far more sinister and hard-hitting.

Vivid Theatre, the theatre company responsible for the five-star reviewed The Collector, and sell out shows Berth and The Centre, is confronting these stereotypes head on in new play Just Checking, a play which challenges, inspires and investigates what it truly means to be an obsessive-compulsive. Based on a series of interviews and speeches from people with first-hand experience of the disorder, from sufferers to academics and politicians, the play brings the audience into the mind of a sufferer, creating an extremely effective and emotive, personal journey.

Just Checking marks the beginning of an exciting, new phase for Vivid Theatre, as they explore new writing with modern themes, set to challenge as well as entertain audiences.

Just Checking is showing at ARC, Stockton from Thursday 4th to Saturday 6th June.

The production comes to Northern Stage, Newcastle on Tuesday 16th and Wednesday 17th June.
